Union Point Master Plan

Originally planned as the first US smart city, Union Point is a 10 million-square-foot development project located just outside of Boston, MA. The project incorporates a mix of residential, commercial office, retail, and manufacturing uses. The project seeks to provide commuter housing with easy access via public transit to the Boston city center, as well as to create its own business and recreation hub at the confluence of three surrounding towns.

Our role was to help with early master planning decisions related to developing the digital strategy and centralized energy system. We modeled various district and distributed energy approaches to assess electrification and mixed-fuel options, greenhouse gas emissions, and cost. Using the results of our analysis, we worked to develop guidelines that incorporated smart city and sustainability approaches.
